Disney must restore the Star Wars CCG license to Decipher

The Issue

In 2001, Lucasfilm declined to renew the Star Wars license used by Decipher Inc. to create The Star Wars Customizable Card Game (SWCCG), the second most popular card game of the era and to this day still one of the most popular of all time. Lucasfilm instead awarded the license to Decipher's biggest competitor, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) who proceeded to squander it with a significantly inferior product.

This was a significant business loss for both Lucasfilm and Decipher.  Lucas owned a significant stake of Hasbro Inc, parent company of WotC. Also, SWCCG was the main competitor of their flagship Magic the Gathering, actually surpassing Magic in sales several times in the late 90's. So, while it was rumored at the time that Lucas dreamed of generating profit for Hasbro and WotC wanted simply to remove their main competition, the fans were the losers and one of the greatest card games ever created was lost.

The time has come for Disney Lucasfilm to rectify the mistake of its predecessor.  There is still an active playerbase in 2020 and a massive amount of market for these cards almost 2 decades after the game ended. Card games are still incredibly popular as seen in the success of Pokemon and Magic the Gathering. There is money to be made and massive potential fanbase.

Do the right thing, Disney. Pick up the phone and call Decipher, who never really recovered from losing SWCCG. Give the Star Wars license back to Decipher and bring back SWCCG for a new generation to enjoy.
