The University of Calabar is a Federal Tertiary Institution funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria. In a recent investigation revealed by the government of Nigeria, it was revealed that most Federal Government owed tertiary institutions were no longer concerned with the task of providing quality education rather that the management of these institutions were more concerned with internally generated revenues through undue imposition of excessive charges on Students.

Recently the Management of the University of Calabar under the leadership of Professor Florence Banku Obi notified members of the public and the students community of the intention of the University Management to increase tuition charges. This increment is coming after the management had increased the hostel fee. This increment will increase the number of School dropouts and illiteracy.

Since access  to Education is a right, increments of this nature will deny many persons from poor homes the right to asses education. It is important to note, that majority of students had voted against the increment while making reference to the difficulties experienced by their parents to raise money for previous semesters, while self-sponsored students had lamented that the the increment will force them out of school.

Educating the generation of Nigerians is our collective responsibility, hence our humble appeal that you join us make education accessible and affordable by signing and sharing this petition as we seek to mount pressure on the University to return to status quo.
