The Issue

Jeffrey Epstein donated $50,000 to the University of Arizona in 2017, after he was convicted in 2008 of a sex crime involving a 14-year-old girl. After the donation was made public in a 2019 news report, a representative of the university said, "We have no plans to repay this contribution.”

The University of Arizona has an opportunity to make amends by donating the same amount to a charity that supports victims of child sex trafficking. The university is central to Tucson's community, and its unwillingness to repay the donation is a stain on our reputation.

The money should have been returned, but we can work to restore our university's good name by ensuring that The University of Arizona makes a donation to a charity that works to combat the same kind of crimes that Jeffrey Epstein was found guilty of. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology did this, and so should we.
