Why this petition matters

Started by Generation Ratify

Despite having more success than the United States Men’s National Soccer Team, the United States Women’s National Soccer Team lacks fair and equitable pay. For every game played, an athlete on the Men’s National Team makes a higher base salary than athletes on the Women’s National Team; furthermore, for every win or tie, the Men’s Team Bonus is higher than the Women's Team. This displays the blatant gender discrimination that is prevalent, not only within the US Soccer Federation, but within the the United States as a whole.

Generation Ratify supports the movement for equal pay for the US Women’s National Team. The fight that started in 2015 is far from over. The USWNT deserves to get fair and equitable pay for the work they put in year in and year out to represent the US internationally. The Women’s Team generates more revenue than the Men’s team and yet they still don't make as much as the men. “If the men's and women's teams won each of the 20 non-tournament games they are contractually required to play, women's team players would earn a maximum of $99,000 ($4,950 per game), while men's team players would earn $263,320 ($13,166 per game).”

We are disappointed in the ruling by Judge Gary Kalusner of the United States District Court for the Central District of California, where he dismissed the claims that the Women’s Team is systematically underpaid by the USSF. This ruling reinforces what we already know: the systemic sexism in our legal system working against women and all marginalized genders is going to make this a hard fight.

With this, we urge the United States Senate to pass SJ Res 6, the resolution to remove the deadline on the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. If the Equal Rights Amendment were ratified, this court case would have gone very differently.

With the approval of the 38 states needed to ratify an Amendment, the removal of the deadline placed on the Equal Rights Amendment will correct the historical exclusion of women and people beyond the gender binary from the Constitution of the United States of America. This legislation will codify equal protection for all people regardless of their gender into law. This includes providing a Constitutional basis for women and all marginalized genders to fight for equal pay.

The Equal Rights Amendment will strengthen our economy. Working towards closing the gender wage gap and achieving equal representation in boardrooms, the Equal Rights Amendment will benefit us all, making women, people beyond the binary, and our economy, stronger.

Sign on to this petition to urge the United State’s Senate to show up for the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and remove the deadline on the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
