Sulfide mining is, primarily, the extraction of sulfide rock (most commonly in the form of pyrite) associated with economically viable minerals such as gold, silver, copper, nickel, iron-ore, etc, and it is a waste by-product. When it is unearthed and brought into contact with air and water, it creates sulfuric acid, equivelent to battery acid. In the form of Acid Mine Drainage, it kills all fish and life in its path and can last for thousands of years, into perpetuity. There is no example of a successfully operated and reclaimed sulfide mine anywhere in the entire world, especially in water rich regions such as the Great Lakes. Lake Superior alone contains 20% of the world's fresh water resources. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 27 million people depend on the Great Lakes for drinking water. We must not sacrifice the world's remaining fresh water in the name of labour to unearth such toxic metals for short-term job promises (in some cases only 5 years such as Rio Tinto's Eagle Project underneath the Salmon Trout River of Lake Superior), for the development of growing economies such as China. Our present and future generations depend on fresh clean drinking water for survival.
