Hi, my name is Jonathan Trott and I am a disabled young adult. I am doing this petition for the 20% of all Americans who live with a disability. Many of those need adaptive equipment or extra help in order to live independently. In my case, I need both to stay independent.
Due to the economy, many states like my home state of Maine, have made cuts to services that effect the disabled in order to balance budgets. This is not right and it puts the safety of many disabled Americans in jeopardy of losing there independence to facility care. I can't even phantom how many disabled people have lost the ability to stay independent because they were denied the help they needed.
In my case, the Medicaid system is denying me the $72 a day to provide me with the in home support I need while Medicare pays $300 a month for medical equipment that sits idle without the in home help. They will, however, pay over $300 a day to put me in a nursing facility. How does this make sense ? So, that's is why I am starting this petition to show lawmakers that the rules & regulations set in place are hurting the disabled population and costing the system more than it needs to.
