no uniforms for stpsb high schools

The Issue

Many students at stpsb always tend to have trouble with school uniforms. Mainly girls but also guys. Many girls struggle to find shorts that are long enough and pants that fit them right for tall girls it’s extremely hard to find school pants that fit you right. I have also notice lots of students struggling to find school uniforms in there sizes most stores are always sold out.Our school system has enacted a dress code that supports conformity. Slidell is a more impoverished community, thus dress code was brought in to allow the more poor community to not be judged in schools around town. However, with this, more problems have been caused monetarily.  For one student, a uniform is typically $150 dollars on average. Assuming that this populace is going for the full four years, this is $600 in total for one student to purchase uniforms for the entirety of high school. In winter it is very cold and i have seen lots of people wear shorts i asked them why there wearing shorts the most common response is “I been trying to find khaki pants that fit me i can’t find any for a reasonable price and that fit me.” Why should parents of students go spend so much money on clothes that there kids will only wear for school. If school didn’t have uniforms kids could wear clothes that they actually like and won’t be used the next school year. The amount of sexualization that is within the dress codes for showing shoulders, knees, and legs is completely unacceptable. Feminine expressing people are often targeted due to the clothes that we wear being too "showy" or "sexual". We should be allowed to show skin, we need equal representation in our schools. With people of color, it is also an issue. The School Boards' dress code is violating the POC women at our school because of genetic body types. The constant sexualization that POC women and men face at our school is uncomfortable, due to the faculty staring and dress coding. Many white people at our schools do not experience as many of these problems. Quote from slidell high student “Today, I experienced getting dress coded because I was wearing fishnets. There are various white people that I have come across who wear fishnets as well are getting disregarded”. This, however, is not a race war. We need to come together to fight the suppression that the school board rules give us. Pearl river high school is the only school in stpsb i have talked to many students there and they have said “i feel like i do better when i’m wearing what i want i am comfortable ,when i had to wear uniforms at my old school i was very uncomfortable because my clothes were to big or to small because i could never find my sizes they were always sold out, and i’m able to express my style in many ways.” Now i understand the school has to have some rules i get that we can’t go to school in a swimsuit and all i get there has to be some rules but at the end of the day we shouldn’t have to show up to school in clothes that are very uncomfortable and that don’t fit us. The school should care more about learning and covid not what we wear. Thank you for taking your time to read this. -stpsb student
