I, Sage Chant, the president of NJHS, have created this petition to speak up for the student body, parents, and teachers of Fort Zumwalt North Middle School, to abolish the rule of not allowing the students to carry their backpacks to each class. We believe this rule will cause more issues then it will solve, such as, students will need to go back to their locker between each class which in turn will cause more hallway traffic, tardy's, and a bigger possibility of Chromebook damage.

To begin, children having to go to and from their locker between each class brings more kids to the hallways, leaving greater access to Chromebook damage. The families of North Middle do not want to constantly worry about paying for computer damages. Equally as important, more tardiness will begin to occur and will create sudden interruptions to learning, as well as causing more kids to get into trouble because they’re late. This is inconvenient to teachers and students because the late children will miss class time and cause a disturbance to their peers who are already learning. Another issue that will occur is the constant need for children to use the restroom in the middle of class because they had no time to do so in-between classes. On top of that, the kids who need access to feminine products will have to go back to where their locker is to gather them; In turn, creating longer time outside of the classroom. Furthermore, the excuse of children needing something from their locker will be used most commonly because the student body cannot bring their backpack into class with them. Being a student myself, I know and understand that my peers and I will have to interrupt the class to go and get something we forgot in our lockers. My classmates and I are fearful that the continuous interruption of our learning to get an item from a locker or to use the restroom, will negatively impact how much we are being taught.

In addition, if we can eliminate the rule that the student body must keep their backpack in their locker during school hours, then the teachers and students will not need to worry about, or cause an interruption to the learning being done. As well as the families of North Middle will not be filled with constant anxiety of their child getting into trouble for being late, or that they might harm their computer.
