South Waikato District Council changing their policy around bottling companies

This petition had 1,998 supporters

In New Zealand there are many natural Blue Springs and one of these being Te Waihou Walkway in Putaruru, New Zealand. Currently this spring is operated by the South Waikato District Council and NZ Pure Blue is wanting to extract a staggering 6.9 million litres a day.

The South Waikato District Councils, policy at this stage for water bottling companies taking water from the Blue Springs is a charge of $1.15 for every cubic metre that exceeds 200,000 litres a day. Currently only the South Waikato District Council extracts the water and this cost them $1.05 per 1,000 litres to treat, manage, distribute and to operate the water.

If NZ Pure Blue gets its fifteen year contact with the South Waikato's Blue Spring this charge (if this is the charge) would not cover the cost to sustain and maintain the vegetation of the Blue Springs. This is a major issue and this water is natural Taonga and it also had historical significance to Maori. It was also a travelling route for King Te Wherowhero Tawhiao, the second Maori King of New Zealand. It was his source for food, water and harakeke (flax).

This petition has been designed to be given to the South Waikato District Council in the hope to change their mind and not allow NZ Pure Blue to extract 6.9 million litres a day but not only this but to have them charge a greater cost for those wanting to extract water for profit. We would like to see a larger cost and a reduction in the amount of water being reducted. This money to which would be charged to water bottling companies should be put back into the natural environment at Te Waihou or for the benefit of the wider local community.

When singing this petition you will be making a stand and having your say on this issue. It is an issue which action needs to be taken immediately. We are planning on getting 50,000 signatures. This petition will then be taken to Jenny Shattock (Mayor of the South Waikato) and the Environment monitoring officer of the South Waikato District Council
