Hello. High School is a time for students to learn and transform, not to be harassed and targets of unnecessary bullying. That being said, it is time to recognize and respect the students of South Park High School. Every year, yearbooks are released and contain the legal names of open transgender students who are known as their chosen name and pronouns by the entire staff, their student peers, etc. Imagine the dismay of those transgender students when they, and their peers, see their legal name in the yearbook. It has been begged by many to change the names of these students, as the yearbook is meant to be a sweet nostalgic memory and not a painful smack across the face. I am petitioning for South Park School District to respect not only me, but the other transgender members of the community who already receive disproportionate harassment by others in day to day life. The National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that 78% of transgender/gender non-conforming students in grades K-12 experienced harassment, while 35% experienced physical assault and 12% experienced sexual violence. It is time for the yearbook to cease these students being singled out due to gender identity and the known legal name of the student. It is not fair to the students who already must cope with the stress of school, social life, etc. We are not asking for a giant change in the legal system, we understand that the legal documents must be kept in order and our names in the legal system cannot be changed. However, the yearbook is a personal memory, not a legal document, and is not attached to our school IDs. Why can these not reflect who we truly are? It is time to allow transgender students to have their chosen name in the yearbook. It would make not only the lives of the students easier, but keep the confusion in the district about these students to a minimum.
