The South Bay Roller Skate Community Deserves A Free Outdoor Skate Space.

The Issue

The South Bay Area has a diverse and robust roller skating community that spans across all ages, genders, and ethnicities. While skating has always been a part of San Jose’s culture, its popularity hugely increased during the 2020 lockdown as people sought ways to enhance their physical and mental health in a socially distant way. In response to this trend, Bay Area skate groups like SJ Roll Call have created their own temporary skate spaces such as Rotunda Roller Rink, and the South Bay region also received its first roller skate shop–key indicators that there is a demand for roller skating in our community.

And yet, seasoned rhythm skaters and new recreational skaters alike across the South Bay all face the same problem: there is not one permanent and free outdoor recreational space designed for roller skaters in the South Bay Area.

As skaters, we make do with open plazas, basketball/tennis courts, or school blacktops, but these spaces have their downfalls: at worst we take falls due to hazards like uneven surfaces, cracks, and debris, and at best we are often asked to leave. Even skate parks and trails are primarily designed for skateboarders and cyclists. When every other recreational activity has practice courts and roller skating does not – where are roller skaters supposed to go?

We envision a free outdoor space designed with roller skaters’ safety at the forefront. A place that is free to all, and hazard-free. A place where new and experienced skaters alike can build their skills, whether they just want to cruise or practice dance moves.

With more skaters joining the community every day, and with more opportunities emerging to provide input for park development and vacant land use, the time is now to make our voices heard and ensure roller skating is a worthy recreational investment that should be here to stay for generations.

Fellow skaters and community members: Will you join us in validating the need for such a space in South Bay and pushing city officials to prioritize a space like this?

And City of San Jose officials: Will you help provide this deserving community with a free, outdoor, and safe roller skating space in the South Bay?
