Confederate flags are a symbol that racial injustice still plagues the United States today. While some may say that this represents their southern heritage and should not be removed, it pains me to see a sign of hatred and division raised so highly. Standing 20-by-30-feet over a major interstate and costing nearly 7,000 dollars, it makes me uncomfortable to feel the ambiance of racism and negativity proudly displayed. Why do we continue to respect and give honor to our ancestors who openly stood for brutality and discrimination? The Sons Of Confederate Veterans claim they are remembering their relatives for their service, but we should not admire soldiers who harbored and practiced hostility towards people of color. On the organization's website, it states that "the preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South's decision to fight", so it is important to remember "the history and legacy of these heroes." These people are not heroes. They didn't fight for for liberty or freedom, but defended slavery. They were blatantly against "the proposition that all men are created equal (Abraham Lincoln)." The flag was originally put up in response to the removal of Confederate memorials in the South, specifically Silent Sam being taken down by protestors at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Smitty Smith of Burke County agreed to have the flag put on his private property as a part of a larger project by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Please sign this petition, so we can live an environment that reflects that everyone is respected and valued equally.
