Save The Bay Of Nigg In Torry, Aberdeen, From Destruction

Save The Bay Of Nigg In Torry, Aberdeen, From Destruction
The Issue
Petition to Aberdeen City Council
Expansion of Nigg Bay (Bay Of Nigg). By the Harbour Board
We the undersigned residents of Aberdeen petition Aberdeen City Council as follows:-
That the Council consider changes to Aberdeen Harbour Board expansion plans that would change the environmental sensitivity,
public use, public access, wildlife habitat of any or all parts of Nigg Bay, and any lands whether coastal or inland in Torry.
Request Aberdeen City Council, independently of the Harbour Board or any of its supporters or employees, engage an
independent, non-governmental body, to survey the flora and fauna in any and all lands, coastal or inland, that the Harbour
Board expansion would have an impact on, be it direct such as from construction, or indirect, such as from the inevitable
increase in pollutants to air, water and soil which any expansion of the existing harbour’s footprint would entail.
The City and this environmental study should acknowledge formally that an increase in the number of ships using the harbour
and the increase in vehicles meeting such ships will have a detrimental impact environmentally on wildlife and the area
residents. The causes for this would be increased particulate pollution from the increased number of vehicles in the area and
chemicals from burning of fuels including but not limited to marine diesel, diesel and other fossil fuels; increased noise pollution
and increased light pollution; further pollution to the harbour waters and any other types of pollution that such an independent
assessment of the environment will determine.
We the undersigned also remind the city that two SSSI sites are at Nigg Bay, and that the SSSI designation should outweigh any
industrialisation plans
We the undersigned wish to make it absolutely clear that it objects to any change in the harbour’s activities that would: be
detrimental to the welfare, well-being and quality of life of Torry residents; be detrimental to area flora and fauna; remove any
land whatsoever from public use such as but not limited to any portion of Nigg Bay. Given that Torry has already had increased
industrialisation over the years that further industrialisation of our residential area and further loss of amenity is unacceptable and
the city should instead of approving harbour expansion should instead grant Nigg Bay and the remaining coastal areas
permanent protection and make them exempt from development and to uphold our human rights which include the right to clean
air and the right to peacefully enjoy our possessions – in this case our homes and gardens which increased road traffic, air, land,
sea pollution, increased noise and increased light at night would deplete.
