The right to have hens - New Carlisle residents only

The Issue

Within city limits in New Carlisle it is illegal to have hens to provide food for the family. This is a basic human right and even cities such as Dayton and Cleveland allow 6 hens per home.  That's right, the city ordinance of Dayton, Ohio allows 6 hens and no roosters.

It was not that long ago Uncle Sam asked everyone to have hens to provide food for their families to prevent starvation without relying on the government because they couldn't provide for the millions needing food.

New Carlisle is a very small city with farms surrounding us all, most have plenty of yard space to have some hens and with today's empty shelves and as much poverty as there is in New Carlisle it would help to have eggs easily available.  Most reasons they are not permitted are because of noise, well they are much quieter than dogs and easier to contain than dogs. With good rules in place we propose there is no reason households in small town new Carlisle cannot provide for their family in such a small, easy, and affordable way. Some may say it is not affordable, we argue that isn't for you to judge but the owners of the chickens to decide. After all, we all pay taxes and legally have a say about what we desire within our community. It will also help the environment. It is proven that there is less waste in communities that have chickens.

Feeding families and helping the environment as well as cutting down on harmful insects are all excellent reasons to have chickens legal to have in our community. Fighting hunger should be one of our biggest priorities without depending on a truck to bring food to our cupboards. We've all seen what can happen so quickly when everything gets shut down, we've all seen the empty shelves. If we act today and don't delay it could greatly help our community in the future.
