The Issue

In Ghana, female students currently face the restriction of having to cut their hair short. This rule, imposed by some educational institutions, undermines the cultural significance and personal freedom of expressing oneself through one’s hair. For many Ghanaian girls, hair is not just a part of their identity; it represents their heritage, cultural pride, and personal choice. We believe it is time to reconsider and change this outdated policy.

Throughout the world, educational authorities are recognizing that forcing students to conform to arbitrary standards like hair guidelines can affect their confidence and self-esteem. In countries like the United States, Canada, and the UK, schools encourage diversity and personal expression, allowing students to maintain their hair. It is time for Ghanaian educational systems to follow suit and embrace these progressive values.

Statistics indicate that there is no direct correlation between a student's academic performance and their hairstyle. According to data from various educational studies globally, allowing students the freedom to keep their hair can actually foster a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Additionally, there are numerous cultural hairstyles that many Ghanaian girls wish to proudly wear. Although we agree this could be problematic and time consuming we suggest one simple hair style which is ponytail.

We propose a revision of the hair code to allow female students in Ghana the freedom to keep their hair in braids or ponytail. It is their natural God giving hair and they should have the right to keep it.

Help us create a supportive and inclusive educational environment in Ghana by allowing female students  keep their hair. Sign this petition to advocate for change and empowerment through cultural and freedom to keep their hair.
