Sriperumbudur is one of the fast developing industrial hub of Chennai. It has car, cell phone and various other manufacturing industries. There are hundreds of automobile auxiliary units are running here. Around 25 engineering colleges are located here. Also it an ancient historic place. The need of suburban railway connectivity is huge and it has been communicated to the central government for decades.

Considering all the above aspects, a new railway line "Avadi - Sriperumbudur via Thirumazhisai, Thandalam, Irukattukottai" was announced and survey was started on 27- December- 1995 and completed by 3- April-1997. Then it has been planned to connect till Guduvancheri. The 55km distance link was estimated Rs.447 crore then later it was revised for many times but still this project is not yet sanctioned.

As per the recent information the railway board has asked the southern railway stop funding on these projects.
