The Problem of Trailside Middle School

The Problem of Trailside Middle School

The Issue

I recall the beginning of the third quarter vividly when, in a moment of forgetfulness, I didn’t complete my work on myLexia. This single oversight plummeted my grade to a D-, demonstrating the disproportional impact these tools can have on our academic standing. Not only can they boost your grade by a mere point, but their neglect can completely devastate your entire class grade. However, this isn't a personal problem. My fellow students and I are subject to mandatory usage of ALEKS, a math program, and myLexia, an English learning device. Far from enriching our education, we find these platforms to be unengaging, tedious and detrimental to our grades.

Despite claiming to promote learning, these tools often fail to deliver comprehensive educational content, making the learning process more challenging. Correspondingly, the degree of reliance on these platforms for grading creates a system whereby students are penalized harshly for non-completion of tasks, regardless of their understanding of the subject matter.

Education should stimulate and inspire students, not stifle them with uninspiring programs that could potentially harm their academic progress. We, therefore, plead for the discontinuation of ALEKS and myLexia use in our schools and encourage educators to find more engaging, efficient, and fair educational tools. Sign our petition if you agree. Let's strive for a more effective and just education system for all students.
