Dear Sir/Ma'am,

Amidst the current global conundrum and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 crisis, I hope you are hale and hearty. I wish for your prolonged well-being. Having said that, with utmost respect I would venture to raise my dissent on the decision that the College authority has thrashed upon the students to have hostel allocation year-wise. I beg your pardon to state that the decision has been despotic and defies all democratic processes in place in an Education institution.

The way this decision has been forcibly imposed on the students in their ignorance and absence is appalling. It is a blow to the democratic practice of moving ahead with consent of the quorum that we have been preached in KGEC. As a result, We being an alumnus, vehemently condemn the decision and the way it has been imposed. We put our justified concerns below and  believe that it will not be autocratically disregarded as a mere emotional outburst of immature minds:

1. Disrupting the bond among the juniors and seniors
Firstly, this decision is an attempt to disrupt the chain of connection between the juniors and seniors across years. We are sure it would need no explicit mention of the benefit that students reap out of it in terms of reference in studies, career and life. It is an extreme common-place scenario that a student is being referred to in companies and research projects in esteemed Institutions by a senior. The current setup of mixing together students of different years and disciplines under one roof nurtures this bond and it is needless to say that the proposed setup is a threat to it.

2. The college is for the student
It is of the highest regret and matter of shame that in our college, a decision like this has been thrashed upon the students overlooking their problems and difficulties. Despite having a student representation in the form of Student's Union, it is simply autocratic to pass a rule like this without the consent of the students. KGEC that I knew was for the student which sadly, cannot be claimed today.

3. Rely on proven successful setup over a grim experimentation

We can see through the rationale behind the decision and that is the reluctance of students in 1st and 2nd years to reside in hostels out of some fear. As a result, the hostels are remaining empty year-on-year which is financially affecting. But if we are to rely on our past, we have seen a contrasting image of togetherness like brothers.

Besides, the new setup will be a fatal experimentation which has been traditionally proven as failure-prone and has side-effects which could be of greater concern in the future.

For example, we can't be blind to the news across the country from various colleges regarding grim and dismal inter-year conflicts. We have seen instances in colleges with the proposed setup where a junior student is hijacked into a senior hostel and later brutally ragged.

There is no room for an incident alike in our current setup. There is always someone to moderate a heated situation and this character trait to maintain balance amidst all odds is proved to have been inculcated among the boarders who live as a family under one roof. I beg of you to not risk these for the sake of an experiment.

Instead an alternate approach without stirring the entire system would be to work on eradicating the baseless fears among the students of junior years regarding the hostel.

4. Disregard to the difficulties of the current students
For study, one needs a space and an environment to adapt to in the growing years. Residing in one premise for 3 years helps in adapting to one environment. Hopping around from hostel to hostel would definitely impact adaptation to the changing environment each year. Needless to say that it will have an impact on studies. This is exactly the difficulty to which you are dragging the current 2nd year and 3rd year boarders of RRR hall, RBC Hall and Vidyasagar Chattrabas into. It must be my infirmity that I could not see anything but whims and exhibition of authority here.

5. Clarifying the hoax regarding trouble in NAAC accreditation when students are not segregated into hostels based on Years.
It is sad to hear a hoax being circulated regarding fictitious troubles that our college might face in NAAC accreditation if students are not splitted into hostels based on years. I would like to affirm with all my stakes that there are no such rules or norms that NAAC has put in the process of its accreditation. Circulation of a narrative as false as this is immensely regretful and I hope you would look into it to prevent its widespread.

6. Crushing the sentiment of the Alumni from the hostels
Though it might sound trivial, but the Raja Rammohan Roy Hall or the Rishi Bankim Chandra Hall or Vidyasagar Chattrabas became a home to thousands of ex-student like me who once left their safe abode in their teenages to became engineer. We have immense trust in you that you would be kind enough to understand the emotional attachment one has with his house. If the current rule is implemented, it would be a deliberate step to cut off these Alumni from their roots and trample upon the emotion of home-coming. I make a plea to not take the home away from us. Besides, We trust in the wisdom of the college authority who will not overlook the glory that the Alumni bring in to the college and thus will not defy the fact that the college belongs to its alumni as much as it is to the current student, teachers, professors, staff and governing authority.

We have immense trust that you would envision our concern and would set an example yet again that my college authority could never trample on the well-being and emotion of numerous students who are residing in the campus as well as toiling hard in some part of the world to keep up the name of our dear Kalyani Government Engineering College.

I would eagerly wait to hear from you soon and anticipating that The Office of Principal - KGEC, will consider our plea as greater KGEC family members.
