Kia ora e te whānau,

MARKING 365 DAYS

This week we mark 365 days of peaceful protection of Mataharehare, Dove Myer Robinson Park, and Te Hā, the Rākau Tupuna (ancestor tree) that is amongst the greatest trees in existence.

We continue our peaceful protection on the park gates 24/7, to keep out the fences and bulldozers of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

To mark this incredible feat, we have three invitations for you:

1.        #LetItGrow – short video release

We have worked with a talented filmmaker to create a short video to capture the voices of the children.  They take a longer view: if we can stop the proposed development, by 2070, Te Hā will reach the cliffs of Mataharehare.  And it will be recognised globally as one of the natural wonders the world.

There are other sites available now to make a meaningful home for the National Erebus Memorial.  The fragile remnant of Mataharehare – the ancient Taurarua Pā site – is already the home of Te Hā, and has been, since the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.  With your support, we will keep it that way.

2.        Picnic with Te Hā

Live family friendly music, BYO picnic, and hear from speakers Zane Wedding (arborist) and Heather Levack (daughter of Sir Dove Myer Robinson).

Also an opportunity to learn more about how you can be part of protecting this place.

Maintain social distancing (free masks available).  Numbers will be small, and we are following all precautions under Traffic Light Red.

This green sanctuary was purchased for you in 1914 by the people of Auckland to be lungs for the future city.

Sunday 6 March, 12pm – 3pm
Mataharehare - Dove Myer Robinson Park
Gladstone Road, Parnell
Auckland

3.        Mataharehare Heart Art Project

We now launch also the Mataharehare Heart Art Project.  Local artists from across Tāmaki Makaurau – children and adults including professional artists – are creating artworks in the form of a heart, for exhibition on the whenua.

The “floating gallery” in the branches of the great pōhutukawa will be on view:

Sunday 6 March, 12pm – 3pm
Saturday 12 March, 12pm – 3pm
Mataharehare - Dove Myer Robinson Park
Gladstone Road, Parnell
Auckland

Every artwork is a piece of history.  The artworks are donated and will be available to purchase by silent auction over two weeks, to raise funds to support the kaupapa.  If you can’t come in person, email contact@SOSNZ.org.nz for a list of the artworks.

Thank you again for your support.

Mauri ora!
