Pigeons are beautiful. Their grace and intelligence bring life to parks and public places, yet they are maligned and abused. Why? Because one London mayor, a pigeon-hater, gave them a bad name in 2001. Hitherto, pigeons had been loved as our allies and messengers of war.
This stigma has remained, blighting the lives of pigeons ever since, and nobody will stop pigeon abuse and persecution. So much for our reputation as a Nation of Animal Lovers!
Pigeons deserve the same love and kindness which is afforded to other birds.
Kindness to pigeons and all animals must be taught to children and young people. Pigeons deserve a good life. They are loyal, intelligent and friendly. They served our nation during wartime, as vital messengers, and their courage in the face of extreme adversity must never be forgotten. They helped us win the freedom which we all enjoy today.
Pigeons do not pose a risk to human health, as confirmed by vets and the RSPB.
Pigeons need protection under the Animal Welfare Sentience Bill, being discussed in Parliament.
