Fearless in wartime, pigeons saved thousands of human lives, as messengers. Carried on ships, planes and submarines, a pigeon would be released if a vessel were attacked, to summon help.
Pigeons flew with messages from agents in France, helped stranded battalions, saved towns from being bombed, brought hope when communication had failed and facilitated the D Day landings, which finally led to victory and freedom.
Today, pigeons are persecuted, their wartime heroism forgotten. Pigeons rarely feature on Remembrance Sunday.
Pigeon abuse is encouraged by adults to children, and poor pigeons are forced to flee from booted feet, threats and persecution.
Forget the abuse! Let’s foster kindness to pigeons!
