Pigeons are amazing, complex and highly intelligent creatures.
They are sentient beings, who feel joy, pain and fear, just like any other creature.
They are one of only a small number of species to pass the ‘mirror test’ – a test of self recognition. They can recognise letters of the alphabet, differentiate between photographs, and even distinguish between different humans in a photograph.
Pigeons are renowned for their outstanding navigational abilities, which helped convey vital messages and saved thousands of human lives during wartime.
Pigeons navigate using the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field, and have an internal ‘magnetic compass’. A study at Oxford University found that they also use landmarks as signposts and travel along man-made roads and motorways, even changing direction at junctions.
Pigeons are highly sociable and can often be seen in flocks of 20 to 30 birds. They mate for life, and tend to raise two chicks at the same time.
Despite this, pigeons are unfairly maligned and abused.
Pigeon abuse causes great upset and deep distress to pigeons and people.
Pigeons need to be recognised as sentient beings under the government’s new Animal Welfare Sentience Bill, which is currently being discussed in Parliament, and must be given full protection under the law.
