Introduce Laws that protect the rights of all road users

Introduce Laws that protect the rights of all road users
The issue
To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:
The petition of the undersigned shows:
Australia has lost too many parents, children, work colleagues, partners and mates as a result of a poorly engineered road network and outdated legal system which no longer provides for the safety of all road users.
Your petitioners therefore request the Senate to urgently call for the introduction of Strict Liability Legislation and Sustainable Road Safety in order to prevent further preventable loss of life on our roads.
The introduction of Strict Liability will require that when moving, motorists have a duty of care not to hit vulnerable road users. However, this new legislation must be workable so that blame cannot reasonably be expected to lie solely with the motorist in all cases where this law is applied.
Sustainable Road Safety will require that in future, all roads and future road modifications must be engineered in a way that takes human failings into account and which results in crashes, injuries and deaths being less common as a more reliable way to improve safety than any amount of punishment after the event. It must be the principle of design by which roads and streets are made to be easy to use, self-explanatory and safe by default, preventing crashes from occurring.
We urge the Senate to commit to reducing Australia’s road toll with the introduction of these measures before yet more vulnerable road users are needlessly claimed on our roads. One life lost through inaction is one life too many
