The Popular Vote

The Issue

The electoral college disproportionality reflects American voters. In recent years there have been 2 times in which the winner lost the popular vote. In 2000 it was a difference of 500,000 votes and in 2016 it was a difference of 3 million votes.  The electoral college also allows for 2 destructive tools against democracy.

1) Gerrymandering: The changing of district borders to influence electoral votes.

2) Winner Take All:  If a candidate wins the majority of electoral votes they win all the votes in the state, making electoral votes to the other candidate worthless.
