Charlemagne was and remains one of the most important people in Christianity, although his significance is acknowledged with a blessing, I believe still deserves the recognition he once held as a Saint. His achievements of note include being crowned the first Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III and spreading Christianity and its teachings further east through Europe. He set up many schools and led to which led to major increases in reading and writing throughout an empire at the time. Additionally, He also ensured the independence of the Papal State protecting the Pope from attacks on Rome, and without him, the Catholic faith may not even exist in the same form it does today. Because of this he was canonised by the anti-pope Paschal (who was an Anti-pope as Alexander III was not elected with the full support of the cardinals, but because he controlled the Vatican he was declared Pope and Paschal an anti-pope.). Therefore the supporters of the Anti-pope had considered him a saint until in 1179 at the Third Lateran Council Charlemagne's canonisation was declared null and void and his sainthood has not been restored since.I believe the Pope should restore Charlemagne's sainthood due to his significance to Christianity.
