The Pledge to End Domestic and Family Violence
The issue
I understand that I can help create a future SAFE from domestic and family violence by being proactive and informed. I know that change is possible and it starts with me.
I pledge to:
See: recognise the signs
I understand that domestic and family violence can take many forms including emotional, psychological, financial, spiritual, technological, physical and sexual abuse. I will be attuned to signs like loss of confidence, social isolation, partner control, and physical injuries.
- I will learn more about the signs of domestic and family violence. Learn more.
- When someone I know is experiencing abuse, I will believe and listen without judgment. Learn more.
- When someone I know is experiencing abuse, I will help guide them to confidential and free services. Learn more.
Act: respond to violence
I will not turn a blind eye – when I see it or hear the signs, I will act responsibly. I understand that safely intervening can mean saving someone’s life.
- When I see or hear a situation that is unsafe, I will call 000.
- When I see or hear a situation that I can safely intervene in, I will do so without putting myself or others in danger. Learn more.
Face-up: lead by example
I understand that what I do and say every day can make a difference and that my behaviour is an example to others. I will ensure I play my part in creating a culture that is respectful and doesn’t minimise or excuse violence.
- I will call out disrespect, discrimination and sexism, if I hear it in someone’s behaviour, jokes, or comments. Learn more.
- I will talk to my family and friends to increase awareness of domestic violence and break down stigma. Learn more.
- I will model respectful relationships, communicating and resolving conflict in healthy ways. Learn more.
- I will offer support in ways that I can such as supporting local domestic violence organisations through donating or volunteering.
Educate: understanding leads to preventing
I recognise that with knowledge and awareness we can stop domestic and family violence before it starts.
- I will take the time to understand what causes domestic and family violence. Learn more.
- I will actively seek opportunities to encourage educational programs and training in my workplace, sport clubs, school/university, place of worship and so on.
By publicly taking this pledge, I hold myself accountable and acknowledge my role in the collective effort to eliminate domestic and family violence.
Join me in pledging to a SAFE future.
