Change the name of "Plantations" neighborhood in Damascus, MD

The Issue

Plantations I and II are both extraordinary communities, and are filled with loving, caring, supportive, empathetic people. These qualities are present in the community events and gatherings and are revealed by how the community has come together during this health crisis to remain vigilant. It is a community that loves and supports each other. It is time that we adopt a name that reflects and honors the characteristics of its incredible residents.

The word Plantations, for some, can conjure a peaceful, rural appeal. However, "Plantations" also serve as a traumatic reminder of this country's blighted, abusive past, conjuring up images of slavery. Plantations celebrated an unjust racial disparity in our country and serve as a reminder of the systemic racism in real estate. How can this be a loving, supportive, and inclusive community to all people when this reminder of hatred remains on our doorstep?

On this date in history, Juneteenth, a date that celebrates the ending of slavery, let us also denigrate the remaining names and images of that regretful past. A past that continues to cause trauma for many of us. Substantial changes are being made across this great country. This is a time of great awakening. Let's change the name or simply remove the signs. The area's original name was Pleasant Plains. Let's make sure all people feel comfortable calling this wonderful community home.

It's time to be actively anti-racist.
