Executive Director, Monroe Mann and VP of the Board, Cherish Pratt, traveled with supporters who included members of academia, journalism, two local historical societies, international studies and law and delivered over 110,000 signatures to the Governor of New York State. The signatures were more than the Associated Press had ever witnessed in their two decades working in the halls of the NY capitol. The tens of thousands of signatures supporting the movement to preserve history, and change the name from the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge to one that shares the name Tappan Zee to honor the late Governor Mario, required 5,000 pages of paper to completely print out. The SOTZ delegation to the capitol also visited the offices of twelve members of Assembly who sit on the Transportation Committee in the NY State Assembly. They delivered messages of goodwill towards the governor for honoring his father and expressed their hope that it was an oversight that his father should be honored not solely, but alongside the local native American and Dutch history that means so much to close to one million citizens in NY State, New Jersey and Connecticut. The Assembly offices were gracious and supportive and received our letters and signed resolutions of support from 8 local historical societies and villages in the region. Today, we respectfully ask those of you who supported the original petition to write to the New York State Governor, the Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, directly. We have drafted a letter for your consideration, and feel free to use it or create your own. Letters can be sent via email. We ask that letters be written using only respectful language and that the Governor be addressed in the traditional salutation he is accustomed to. SEND EMAIL To: Press.Office@exec.ny.gov , dklepper@ap.org, Call the Governor’s Office by PHONE: 1-518-474-8390 Cuomo Press Office in Albany: (518) 474 - 8418 Cuomo Press Office in New York City: (212) 681 - 4640 LETTER The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo Governor of New York State NYS State Capitol Building Albany, NY 12224 Dear Governor Cuomo, As a tax-paying citizen, I want to sincerely thank you for the respect and support you have shown to issues of crucial importance for the State of New York. I am writing to let you know that I am one of the over 111,000 people who have signed a petition to honor your father while also honoring the traditions of ancestors between members of our larger “family” as citizens of New York. I respectfully request that you consider the over one million citizens who support the renaming of the New Bridge (spanning Rockland & Westchester Counties) as The Mario M. Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge. As a member of your New York State family, I am grateful for and would support memorializing the superb legal advocacy and public service offered to our state by your father, the late Governor, Mario M. Cuomo. I would also ask that you consider sharing the Cuomo name on the new Bridge with the Tappan Zee, just as your father did in honor of his predecessor, re-named the Tappan Zee Bridge as the Malcolm Wilson/Tappan Zee Bridge, in 1994. I ask you to consider the rich history we have in this region, and in retaining the Tappan Zee name, we honor your father alongside other honored forefathers who made this nation and state what it is today. Respectfully submitted, NAME TOWN, STATE
