Some petition signers are asking about another particular fundraiser from 2016 I started to help me raise money to attend police academy in Florida. They want to know what I did with the money raised. Good question! Here’s the update you all requested, for you are entitled to an answer: Yes, one of my life dreams was/is to work in law enforcement. Using a fundraiser, I successfully raised the money I needed to pursue this dream. To my credit, I am proud to report that I did in fact graduate from the SW Florida Public Service Academy in Fort Myers, among the top of my class, and I am now a certified Florida police officer. I have a number of applications now pending with departments in Florida, and I am also looking into potentially working with the Greenwich Police Department in CT, now that I'm back north. While at the academy in Ft. Myers, I was taking care of my elderly father at the same time, all while continuing my work as a NY attorney / tutor / coach remotely. This past fall, my dad’s health deteriorated suddenly and sadly, he died in October of this year, shortly after my graduation from the academy on September 23. 2017. While my applications with police departments are pending, I moved home to NY to assist my mother with handling the estate. That’s when I discovered the news about the bridge. I am a certified Florida police officer for four years, so there’s no rush that I work as a cop right at this moment. If I end up helping this Tappan Zee cause further and as a result, defer my police officer plans temporarily, so be it. I will continue to work as an attorney until plans change. Note that I used the money from this police fundraiser exactly as advertised: for tuition and helping me with rent while there. Note further that all the money was raised from family and friends, not strangers—so comparing this fund raiser to the Tappan Zee fundraiser is apples and oranges. It is important to note that this police academy fundraiser has ended successfully, I did what I said I was going to do, the money was all used as advertised, and the donors are all pleased with the progress I have made so far towards my goal. While not yet a police officer, I completed the academy, and am actively searching for police officer opportunities, and can continue to do so for the next 3 1/2 years, while my certification is valid. My success with prior fundraising here on the GoFundMe platform should not be looked at with suspicion, but instead, as a testament to my ability to raise money in order to bring projects to completion, and to do exactly what I say I will do with any money raised. Thanks for your question, and here's to the continuing success with the Tappan Zee fundraiser. AGAIN: I have not yet touched ANY of the money raised. It is still with GoFundMe. I will not touch any of the money until it is clear that my proposal has enough support. I have no intention to do anything with this money except exactly what I said I would do with it.
