Cancel RENR Exams and Grant Registered Nurses License to Graduates and Final Year Students
The Issue
Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates and Final year Nursing Students in Jamaica and across the Caribbean went through 4 years of vigorous Nursing Practical and Theoretical training before awarded a degree. They are later tested in General Hospitals after which they sit a written exam that is marked on a curve. They are only given 3 tries to these exam. Should they fail for 3 consecutive times, there is no hope for them after 4 years and a degree! No License. Many graduates are left with student loans to repay up to 3.5 million dollars and are unable to resit exams.
Theses gradutes are currently holding degrees and are unable to work because they had exceeded their three tries (3) should be given their Registered Nurse License with immediate effect removing RENR exam barrier enabling them to be able to work during this crisis and beyond.
A nursing graduate is only give 3 tries to the RENR exam which is only administered every 6 months making it difficult for them to work. These exams should be cancelled or the 3 tries removed making the duration of time for a nurse to sit RENR exam unlimited and done on a monthly basis.
