Award Jocelyn Bell Burnell the Nobel Prize in Physics she should have received in 1974.
The Issue
In 1967, while a PhD student at the University of Cambridge, Jocelyn Bell Burnell (b. 1943) was the first person to notice, analyze and understand the importance of an anomalous radio signal that led to the discovery of pulsars, a monumental astrophysical discovery that advanced humanity's understanding of the universe. Yet when it came time to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work, two men received the prize. She was excluded, and her critical, central role was not recognized or acknowledged.
This is a serious injustice it is not too late to rectify. Correct the historical record. Give Bell Burnell the Nobel Prize she deserved, and do it while she can accept it in person and we can rejoice for her.
Let everyone thereby understand and recognize the groundbreaking contributions women have made to science.
