Ban Cycling and Motorcycling in Public in Wales

Ban Cycling and Motorcycling in Public in Wales

The Issue

In light of the recent announcement to ban e-cigarettes from public places for the health of the country, we bring to the attention of the National Assembly for Wales the much more dangerous risk to public health, that of cycling in public.

In 2013, the number of cyclists involved in accidents in public was 496, of which 100 were KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) incidents (source: Welsh Road Accident Database). It is our belief that such a dangerous pursuit should not be permitted and that all cycling should be limited to private property or - safer still - on static cycling machines.

In addition to the clear and obvious danger to health of cycling itself, there is anecdotal evidence that cycling leads to more dangerous pursuits, such as motorcycling. We cannot allow the 'gateway' pursuit of cycling to influence any more people to take up motorcycling. In 2013, there were 685 incidents involving motorcycles, of which 246 were KSI (source: Welsh Road Accident Database).

The figures included above do not take into account the 'passive' involvement of pedestrians and car drivers caught up in these incidents, of which they may have had no blame nor liability. It is grossly unfair for the population at wide to have to tolerate such anti-social and dangerous public pursuits.

Given that the National Assembly for Wales is so concerned for the health of the nation, we call upon the assembly to bring forth legislation to ban cycling and motorcycling and rid this country of the dangers to public health which they undoubtedly bring.
