The name of Richard Montgomery High school should be renamed immediately.

The Issue

The Richard Montgomery High school was founded and established in 1892 and was named after a man named Richard Montgomery who was a slave owner. Richard Montogomery was a general in the continental army during the American Revolutionary War and became a slave owner when he got married into his wife's family. He owned 26 slaves in 1790, according to historians. The name of the school “Richard Montgomery high school” should be changed because the school’s name was named after a slave owner. The schools of Montgomery county, one of the richest public school districts should be named after the values of our schools. Something that we students value like our education and advocacy. No school should be named after a slave owner or someone who was for slavery. Our goal as a community and system is to make sure we create a safe environment and make students from our schools as comfortable as possible, so we create a proper environment for our students to learn in. This is a serious situation because how can our schools improve and grow as a community from these social injustices as well as grow from racism. This matter should be taken seriously and immediately for the sake of our beloved students especially those who experience racism and discrimination every day. Based on the history and the actions of Richard Montgomery, why should his name bring representation and be named after any school? How will parents feel about their child attending a school where the school is being named after a slave owner? These parents deserve a good answer and deserve a school where they feel comfortable letting their child attend. That is why Richard Montgomery High School should be renamed immediately.
