The Metropolitan Police have attempted to stifle protest over the murder of Sarah Everard, resulting in scenes of violence on Clapham Common. Not only are there serious questions to be answered over the fact that Sarah's alleged murderer was a serving police officer and what that says about the toxic culture within the institution, but the police have spectacularly mishandled the public response.

Women should be afforded the right to peaceful protest, and if the police had been willing to work with organisers instead of against them, this violence would not have happened. When football fans celebrated victory in Glasgow, we didn't see this level of police violence: it has been targeted at peaceful protesters, mostly women.

We demand change at the very top of this  toxic organisation. Cressida Dick must apologise and resign, and future peaceful protests must be allowed to continue. Any other course of action will mean that women's trust in the police force will completely break down.
