Preserve and restore the Carlos Club and its neon sign

  1. The Carlos Club is an historical icon and should be preserved.                                        The Carlos Club and its iconic 30 foot high neon sign are in danger of being altered or demolished by a new owner.  He has already made illegal changes, removing the neon tubing from the letters and damaging the metal signage from the awning over the front door without getting any permits from the city.
  2. BACKGROUND:                                                                                                                 The Carlos Club at 612 El Camino Real in San Carlos, California, was remodeled in 1947 and is considered a classic example of the Streamlined Moderne Art Deco style, popularized in the 1930s and 1940s.  The stunning neon is also an early example of modern American roadside architecture.  Sadly, these historic neon signs are disappearing across America and need to be preserved.  Please don’t let the Carlos Club change or fade into oblivion.
  3. In 1991, the Art Deco Society of California gave a preservation award for the accurate restoration of the neon sign, the mint green Carrara glass on the facade and other restoration details.  In that same year the City of San Carlos deemed this building one of its 52 historic resources, and listed it in the City of San Carlos General Plan.  Under California law historic resources are considered part of the environment under CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act), and provides protection whether its on the national register or not.

While the city is moving toward taking these measures, time is of the essence.  The Carlos Club needs to be protected before any other changes are made, and the damage done already needs to be repaired.

Businesses will come and go.  The destruction to an iconic facade and its neon, one that is seen as a local landmark and beloved by its citizens, is forever.

The Carlos Club is an iconic landmark that sits at the main crossroads of the city. It has been sited in many architectural and cultural publications and has been captured by artists in paint, pen, prints and photographs.  It was even rendered in a famous greeting card.  It’s an image that lets people know they’ve arrived in San Carlos.  It distinguishes our town from the others up and down El Camino Real.  It’s the signpost to “The City of Good Living” and should be restored and preserved as a landmark.
