The Life of Dr. Farhad Meysami is in danger
The Issue
Iranian physician and woman rights activist Dr. Farhad Meysami is in grave danger.
Dear Doctors without borders, Red Cross, and Red Cresent,
The shocking photos of Dr. Farhad Meysami show him in a horrible state after losing weight due to a prolonged hunger strike.
Those photos have shaken the Iranian healthcare professional community and raised concern among people worldwide.
According to the professional opinion of one of his colleagues in Iran: His photos reveal severe Rhabdomyolysis that may cause permanent damage to the heart and kidneys and can lead to his death. During a prolonged hunger strike, Rhabdomyolysis is caused by consuming skeletal muscles to maintain metabolism.
Farhad Meyssami, MD. was arrested on July 31, 2018, because he opposed the mandatory Hjiab law and publicly supported Iranian women fighting to change this discriminatory law. The allegation brought against Meysami is acting against national security, a relatively common accusation against Iran's political and civil rights activists. During his mock trial, he was denied access to a lawyer. He went on a hunger strike on August 1, 2018. He sent a message from prison saying," My hunger strike is out of respect for my dignity and the dignity of those who have been detained on baseless accusations, those who are being interrogated while they have no access to a proper and legitimate legal representation. I will not, under any conditions, succumb to the demands of this illegal procedure."
On December 2018, Dr. Meysami was sentenced to 5 years in prison. On October 2020, even though he contracted the coronavirus, the Islamic Regime denied his release, and he was kept in solitary confinement.
During the last four years, Dr. Meysami has gone on a hunger strike to protest the Regime's violation of rights. He has been on strike for several months to support the "woman., life, freedom" revolution, demanding " Stopping the execution of protestors, releasing the political prisoner and dismantling the forced Hijab law.
In his recent message, Meysami states: "I will continue my impossible mission in the hope that it may become possible later on with a collective effort."
We, people of the world, urge you to take prompt action to stop this clear violation of human rights; step forward to support the imprisoned physician by:
1- Publicly condemning the arrest of Dr. Farhad Meysami as a member of the healthcare community
2- Demanding the Iranian Regime the unconditional release of Farhad Meysami
3- Assigning a physician to become Farhad Meysami's political sponsor to advocate for him. The support of politicians and activists is essential. The attention drawn to political prisoners by elected officials provides innocent detainees with protection through publicity and media coverage.
Thank you for your support. As we all know, "injustice to one is an injustice to all."
In Solidarity,
