Dear Johanna Sigurdardottir,
I am writing to urge you to end Iceland’s whaling policy. Like the majority of the UK public, I am horrified that Iceland is once again pressing ahead with the slaughter of whales, despite the unacceptable cruelty involved, the lack of demand for whale meat and the potential damage to Iceland’s economy and tourism interests.
New polling shows 82% of the British public to be opposed to whaling, with 64% prepared to avoid purchasing Icelandic products such as fish and prawns in protest if whaling continues.(YouGov May 2009)
Scientific analysis shows there is no humane way to kill a whale – it can take over half an hour for them to die. This killing is also unnecessary – there is little market for whale meat.
When compared to the success of Iceland’s whale watching industry, which brings in almost £5m a year for coastal communities, it is obvious that whales in Iceland are worth far more alive than dead. I urge you to cancel this year’s whaling quota immediately and instead protect Iceland’s whale watching industry; a humane, sustainable and financially beneficial alternative to the cruelty of whaling.
With Iceland’s economy in a fragile condition, I urge you to act now to prevent further damage to Iceland’s business interests and international reputation because of commercial whaling.
Yours
