The Internet as a Lifeline During Calamities

The Internet as a Lifeline During Calamities
The Issue
On September 30, 2025, an earthquake struck Cebu City, leaving countless families in distress, including my own. As we navigated the chaos, social media became an unexpected lifeline for my family, helping us connect with others, access critical updates, and coordinate with local aid organizations. This personal experience highlighted the pivotal role social media can play in disaster communication and relief efforts.
In the past, information during calamities primarily flowed through traditional media channels like TV, radio, and print. These sources, though valuable, often offered delayed updates, which limited quick response and adaptation. However, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have revolutionized the way we receive and share information. They allow real-time updates and enable direct communication with authorities and aid agencies.
During the Cebu City earthquake, social media facilitated instant dissemination of important information—such as safe locations, relief distribution points, and missing persons reports. Families, social workers, and government agencies could share and access data swiftly, making response efforts more effective. According to a study by the United Nations in 2023, around 70% of disaster relief efforts in Southeast Asia have successfully integrated social media platforms, enhancing coordination and reach.
To further empower this digital transformation in disaster response, I urge our local government and relevant agencies to establish formal social media liaison teams. These teams would be responsible for verifying information, preventing misinformation, and ensuring that all stakeholders have access to crucial updates in real time. Additionally, launching awareness campaigns on the responsible use of social media during emergencies can educate and prepare the community for future crises.
Your signature will support this effort to harness the power of social media further and improve disaster response in Cebu City and beyond. Please sign this petition to advocate for a safer and more connected community in times of crisis. Together, we can make sure the affected families receive timely assistance and information when they need it the most. Sign and share with your network to amplify this crucial initiative.
