end 'turnaround' schemes that privatize public schools

The CPS School Board voted to hand over neighborhood public schools – including Piccolo and Casals Elementary on Chicago's west side--to politically connected private agency, AUSL. CPS claims the schools have failed and want to do a Turnaround- fire teachers and staff- but school officials have DENIED their role in underfunding and mismanaging these schools for more than five years. IL Parents continue their protest and state legislators have responded with bills that would put a hold on Turnarounds and school closures for a year while making CPS work with the school community on clear plans for school improvement and accountability. We the undersigned support HB4487,  SB3239 and the larger effort to stop handing our schools over to private agencies.

Letter to
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel
Illinois State House
Illinois State Senate
The Chicago Board of Education just voted to close or Turnaround 17 neighborhood public schools. Unlike every other school board in the state, this board is appointed by the Mayor because in 1995, IL state legislators handed over the Chicago school district to mayoral control. CPS claims the schools have failed and wants to fire teachers and staff but school officials have DENIED their role in underfunding and mismanaging these schools for more than five years. Parents have responded by occupying Piccolo school. Their demand? Don’t hand our schools over to mediocre outside agencies. Parents continue their protest and state legislators have responded with bills that would put a hold on Turnarounds and school closures for a year while making CPS work with the school community on clear plans for school improvement and accountability. I urge you to endorse bills HB4487 and SB3239.
