Why this petition matters

Started by LiisBeth Media

On March 8th, the Canadian Federal Government announced a Task Force on Women in the Economy.

It's job will be advise the government on a feminist, intersectional action plan that best addresses gender equality in the wake of the pandemic. The representatives includes top tier women from across the country representing all types of constituencies except women entrepreneurs.

Apparently, women entrepreneurs are not part of women in the economy?

The ASK: Join us in petitioning the government to include womxn entrepreneurs by appointing someone from the women's entrepreneurship community today.

The fact is all women are/will be entrepreneurs at some point in their life--and this includes wage earning women inbetween jobs, or working to start companies.  The vast majority of womxn led enterprises are 1-4 people large. We are not talking the 1% ers here.

Canada's 1M + Women entrepreneurs have seen their enterprises disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Women entrepreneurs ARE part of the economy.

  • Women are majority owners of 15.6% of SME owners with employees but represent 38% of self employed Canadians. Most programs are targeting SMEs with employees.
  • While women account for a disproportionate number of NEW start-ups15, they are more likely to become self employed or launch an SME from non-employment than men who are more likely to launch
    from employment.

Let's get a seat at the table--the sisterhood --powerful as it may be--is not complete without us.
