Maximum penalty for a South Carolina dog abuser

Maximum penalty for a South Carolina dog abuser
The Issue
Animal abuse is one of the most disgusting crimes committed on helpless, voiceless living beings that cannot protect themselves. Those who abuse animals should be prosecuted to the extent of law, just like it would happen in case of a person abuse.
Being a foster parent for an animal rescue group, I see way too many abuse cases. Majority of these cases never end up in a court; and if they do, the penalty is not adequate to the crime inflicted on the defenseless animal. It hurts me to see time after time, case after case, how the animal abusers, the monsters who take a pleasure in inflicting pain and suffering, are getting away with it.
I don’t want this case to be another one that goes unpunished!
On Saturday, October 1st, the Rock Hill South Carolina Police arrested Christian Porter after his own mother reported him torturing his female pit bull. She said he was beating the dog repeatedly over the period of time.
Porter told officers that he “teaches and beats the dog to discipline it ‘to a T.’” “He stated he ‘pins the dog down and tells it how he feels about it’” He admitted to hitting the dog in the face and “whooping” her so hard causing the dog’s body to spin around. He even demonstrated on a pillow how hard he hit the dog.
Animal Control arrived to evaluate the pit bull, which police said appeared frightened and would not make any movement. Police charged Christian Porter with Violation of City Ordinance (animal abuse) and seized the dog, which remains in the care of the York County Animal Shelter until the case is resolved.
Christian Porter’s case is scheduled for November 21 at at 1pm. He was held on $750 bail. Please, note that Porter is well known to the police: he has multiple civil cases on his record, as well as larceny and possession of drugs.
For abusing his dog, Porter is charged with violation of City Ordinance, which states that a person who inflicts unnecessary pain or suffering upon any animal, is guilty of a misdemeanor, which is only subject to fines not to exceed $500 per offense or imprisonment not to exceed 30 days.
However, Porter could be sentenced according to much harsher South Carolina Code of Laws (Section 47-1-40-B), where a person who inflicts excessive or repeated unnecessary pain or suffering upon an animal, is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be punished by imprisonment of not less than one hundred eighty days and not to exceed five years and by a fine of five thousand dollars.
Please, join me in asking Mrs. Paula Brown, a City Solicitor, and the Honorable Raymond J. Long, Jr., assigned to Porter’s case, to be the voice of the voiceless and let South Carolina and the rest of the States know, that animal abuse wont be tolerated in your city, in your county, or in your State.
Please, charge and sentence Porter to a maximum penalty based on South Carolina Code of Laws (Section 47-1-40-B), permanently remove the dog from Porter’s custody, and prevent Porter from owning a dog or any other animal for at least the next 10 years, after completing his sentence.
