Don’t abandon young people with psychosis in South Australia – please help us

The issue

“It's long past time to listen to the people who know. THESE SERVICES ARE VITAL. When people were ignored in Queensland, the Barrett Centre was closed without adequate replacement services. And three young people have died … so far. Mental health is a torturous plague. Our governments should be building on services that already exist … not taking them away!!” - concerned community member on our petition

This is gutting. As youth mental health is in crisis, they’re ending funding and shutting down South Australia’s only youth early psychosis intervention service, the headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program.

Without a program such as this, hope for a functional life for young people living with psychosis looks bleak.

This is a service we desperately need to stay open.

As young people ourselves, we want to ask: “who has our back?” If we cannot rely on politicians to tackle our most important issues, we need to hold them to account.

Please, please help us. Cutting this program will put young people at risk. We need the funding restored before it ends on June 30th (just days before election).

The Decision Makers

Penny Wong
Minister for Foreign Affairs
Responded
This morning we were joined by Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis MP and Senator Anne McEwen to meet with the SA Youth Mental Health Action Group to hear about their fight to keep the Adelaide early psychosis centre open. Their successful change.org petition has put this issue loudly on the agenda and Labor stands with them against the government’s decision to close this centre. Labor if elected would keep this centre open to support young people who need help with their mental illness to get back on track and lead a healthy life.
Sussan Ley
Minister for the Environment
Responded
On Sunday the Turnbull Government announced our 2016 mental health policy which ensures the best help for people with mental health issues. Here are a few facts. Funding for the mental health care of young Australians was never - I repeat never - going to be cut, and our 2016 election policy commits an extra $192 million to look after the mental health of the nation. We will continue funding for six Early Psychosis Youth Services and 100 headspace services, as well as investing $20 million for another 10 new headspace sites. The recent decision by the federal government to cut crucial funding to Headspace needs to be reversed. I support the re-establishment of these funds to maintain the important support Headspace provides in early interventions for young people suffering from psychosis. This service is crucial to provide those youth challenged by mental illness the opportunity to live a healthy life.
