Gwen Boone started this petition to The Hendrix College Board of Administration

In light of the growing sense of apathy and lack of student involvement on this campus, a new administration needs new ways of cultivating a positive experience inside the classroom and out.

Despite lack of transparency regarding the plans for renovating the traditional residence halls, it has become clear to students that Martin and Veasey will not be receiving the attention they deserve within the next few years (or perhaps even by the time current freshmen graduate).

With that being said, we as students can no longer stand to be complacent in the wasting of resources, such as the energy necessary to keep emergency lights on 24/7. Nor can we continue feeding into the sense of apathy and lack of community that has occurred due to the loss of these pillars in the Hendrix community.

Martin and Veasey hall have done more to connect current students and alumni in ways that cannot be described. In depriving current and incoming freshmen the experience of these halls, we deprive them of a way to integrate themselves into the full Hendrix community.

So we as current Hendrix College students are urging for this new administration to learn from the past and become more perceptive of students thoughts, concerns, wants, and needs. We ask that our beloved Martin and Veasey Halls be reopened, despite not being renovated. We understand the concerns that may surround this action. However, we believe that frustration and apathy will continue to grow while the overall well-being and sense of community on campus will decline if we continue to allow these dorms (and their legacy’s) lay dormant for another year.
