Students of Colour At Northcliff High School started this petition to The Headmaster, the Vice-Principals, the Staff and the Governing Body at Northcliff High School and

Racism is an injustice people of colour have to face on a constant basis. From the moment we are born until the moment we die, we live in a world knowing fully well that all the odds are against us. The colour of our skin has a history of having been the victim of oppression that despite our best efforts, we are unable to shake due to the reoccurance of that oppression in modern day society. Although apartheid, slavery and colonisation are no longer in existence, there is still a systematic and institutionalized racism that has manifested in our society - particularly in our school.

Northcliff High School is a relatively diverse school with all races prevalent in South Africa well represented. However, students of colour cannot help but feel like the colour of their skin already places them at a disadvantage. This is substantiated by the constant racist remarks made by either students or teachers which go relatively unpunished; a classroom placement system which places more white students in higher grade classes and more black/coloured students in lower grade classes; sports such as rugby or cricket (which white students are generally more interested in) being endorsed over sports such soccer (which PoC students are generally more likely to participate in) and so forth; telling girls to remove their dreadlocks if they aspire to be Prefects; severely punishing students of colour as opposed to the white students. The list goes on.

No one expects Northcliff to get it right the first time but also embedded in the school DNA at the moment, is a culture of not taking the opinions of students of colour into consideration. The school has always maintained it has an open door policy, however, when that policy is utilized there is seldom any real change. This leads to the sentiment amongst students of colour that their contributions to the school are not as valued as those of their white counterparts.

Also, a lot of decisions affecting students of colour are made by a staff that is at least 96% white who have no real understanding of the issues affecting students of colour.

In light of the recent issues with racism our school has seen in recent days as well as the larger, global #BlackLivesMatter movement, please sign and spread this petition to help make our school a better place for students of colour.
