Globe and Mail: Margaret Wente Needs to Go

The Issue

This is a call to action. Boycott The Globe and Mail until Margaret Wente is gone.

Check out a recent interview I did with the folks at Built Environment about Wente's problematic claims about sexual violence.

There are numerous issues within Margaret Wente's columns. We are specifically concerned about Margaret Wente's failure to adhere to journalist ethics surrounding her columns about sexual assault.

More recently, Ms. Wente was caught for plagiarism for the second time. To read more about issues of plagiarism click here. The lack of honesty and integrity in addition to negligence of the editorial team at the Globe and Mail further demonstrate the need to hold both Ms. Wente and The Globe and Mail accountable to their readers and the Canadian public.

We are calling for a national boycott of the Globe and Mail - We are asking people to refuse interviews with Globe and Mail journalists, do not pitch stories to The Globe and Mail, do not view or share articles from the Globe and Mail on social media and cancel your subscription.

The Globe and Mail editors are negligent and complicit in breach of journalist ethics by publishing the work of Ms. Wente. Within the last month, Ms. Wente has published two articles that blatantly ignore decades of empirical research pertaining to sexual and gendered violence. As long as Margaret Wente continues to write for The Globe and Mail, the public cannot have confidence in the research, fact checking and originality of her columns.

We demand an extensive fact check of Margaret Wente's column titled Save us from hashtag justice published on April 2, 2016. We seek that a correction notice be issued with the factual information. We also ask that Ms. Wente be removed as a columnist immediately as her opinions are presented as fact and perpetuate discriminatory assumptions devoid of decades of empirical research.

Columnists must be held accountable.
