The Freedom to Ride Act: Let Texans Use ATVs on the Road

The Freedom to Ride Act: Let Texans Use ATVs on the Road
The Issue
Texans deserve the freedom to ride safely, responsibly, and legally.
We’re calling on state lawmakers to pass The Freedom to Ride Act — a simple, common-sense bill that would allow properly registered, insured, and equipped ATVs to operate on public roads with speed limits of 50 MPH or less.
It’s time to bring Texas law up to speed with the reality on the ground.
📜 What We’re Asking For:
We urge the Texas Legislature to support and sponsor legislation that would:
✅ Allow registered and insured ATVs to operate on public roads posted 50 MPH or less
✅ Require safety features like lights, mirrors, turn signals (or hand signals), and a horn — if factory-equipped or readily available
✅ Ensure drivers hold a valid license and carry ATV-specific insurance
✅ Treat responsible riders with equal rights on the road — just like motorcycles or golf carts
🚨 Why This Matters:
Modern ATVs are road-ready. Most already come with headlights, taillights, and mirrors. They're not toys — they're tools.
Texans already use them. In rural communities, around farms, and even suburban neighborhoods — this law simply brings clarity and safety.
Other states already do. Arizona, Utah, and Montana have passed similar laws — and it works.
It helps traffic and the environment. Smaller, more efficient vehicles reduce congestion and fuel use.
It supports rural mobility and local businesses. Legal ATV access boosts small-town economies and tourism.
