Police unions, where are the plans to dismantle racism within your orgs?
The Issue
The creation of the American police force was rooted in white supremacy with an emphasis on anti-blackness. It is high time that the engine that was created to suppress blackness for over a century lead the way and set a global example of liberation, leading our communities and become true agents of peace and change.
Systemic racism needs to be dismantled from the top. Your organizations represent the pinnacle of law enforcement in the nation. With that being stated we implore you to come up with comprehensive plans for your respective organizations, associated organizations and all of its members to lead the charge in creating a welcoming and peaceful environment for all community members, especially people of color.
First, you all need to acknowledge the history and pain inflicted on communities of color. That step needs to be followed by the creation of programs for reconciliation and healing.
We need to see plans for hiring non biased officers and ongoing trainings that don't criminalize people of color. Implicit biases need to be tested and corrected on a regular basis. We need to see nationwide plans to enact community policing and hire officers who patrol the cities and towns they live in.
You need to vanquish the war-like mentality most officers have been indoctrinated with. We are community members not enemy combatants or infidels. Officers need to think of the people they are charged with protecting and serving as neighbors we are. We are not the enemy, we are your community.
We need more social workers and mental health specialists within police forces and less military style weapons. These measures will not only help the community members but officers as well.
You need to stop training officers to shoot to kill and if necessary shoot to disarm. You need to train officers proper de-escalation techniques.
Last but not least, you need to punish officers who kill unarmed individuals not help them. If most people were bad at our jobs we'd at least be fired. If a social worker were to talk about a client in the grocery store they could not only get fired but face legal repercussions. So taking someone's life should warrant punishment. And if your organizations value the feelings of officers over the life of the citizens that pay your members' salaries then a change of heart should be mandated and organizational objectives need to be overhauled ASAP.
