Traffic Safety in Forest Hills Gardens
The Issue
Petition to the Board of Directors of the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation
We are all residents of Forest Hills Gardens and members in good standing of the Forest Hills Gardens Corporation.
For years, the Board has consistently failed to do anything about the flood of non-resident vehicles using our community each day as a pass-through, speeding dangerously on our streets and ignoring our stop signs and posted speed limits.
The volume and speed of traffic and the disregard for our rules and street signs creates a direct risk to the lives, health and safety of the members of our community; damages our quality of life; reduces property values; and leads to unnecessary costs to the Corporation and its members. It is only a matter of time until one of these vehicles kills or maims someone.
The Board has a Traffic Committee, whose mandate is to:
“[S]tudy and observe the traffic flow on our streets and to implement measures to help keep our streets safe. Our main goal is to keep our streets safe for pedestrians, especially our children, and to keep non-Gardens flow to a minimum.”
Yet neither the Board nor the Traffic Committee have done anything about this pressing danger to our community, despite numerous requests and suggestions from the community in the past.
We implore you to take immediate action to:
(i) significantly limit the volume of non-resident vehicles entering Forest Hills Gardens to use it as a pass-through,
(ii) slow the speeds of those that do, and
(iii) ensure that our stop signs and traffic rules are respected.
The board should take immediate emergency measures to address this safety issue while simultaneously hiring an expert on traffic calming and flow to develop a comprehensive solution for the entire community, with all options considered.
