Let's Get VAR Banned From English Football
The Issue
Time has proved that whenever humans find a solution to a problem, the panacea paradoxically creates more problems. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was introduced to football to eliminate refereeing errors but unfortunately, it has created more controversies than anticipated.
Why I want the VAR banned from football
If you have been following any football league or competition where VAR has been used, I am sure that you will agree with me that it has caused more harm than good.
For instance, in the Premier League that I follow every week some of the referees make controversial decisions after using the VAR. A referee could suddenly revisit an incident that we thought had been forgotten after his attention has been brought to it by other referees monitoring the VAR. And guess what? The outcome is usually heartbreaking for the fans.
VAR does not just affect English Clubs
The SPAL vs Fiorentina match that was played on the 17th of February 2019 is a perfect example of how the VAR can break the heart of fans. In this particular match, SPAL and Fiorentina were even at 1-1 until the 74th minute when Federico Chiesa was fouled in the box. The referee turned down a penalty appeal and while the Fiorentina players were murmuring about the decision, SPAL scored one minute later and made the scoreline 2-1 many other EG in the Premier League
Unfortunately, the referees monitoring the VAR drew the attention of the referee to review the foul on Federico Chiesa. Shockingly, after reviewing the incident, the referee awarded a penalty to Fiorentina and also canceled the goal scored by SPAL in the 77th minute.
Jordan Vertout scored the penalty and put Fiorentina ahead with a 2-1 lead. Sadly, the game ended by 4-1 in favor of Fiorentina. I am sure the referee’s decision after reviewing the VAR demoralized the SPAL players, which is why the game ended in that way.
in the UEFA Champions League game between Porto and Roma, the referee made a poor decision. He failed to use the VAR when Roma had a penalty claim but gave a penalty to Porto in the dying minutes after another video referral.
We Need this Addressing as it's taking the FUN out of Celebrating a Goal
