The Flat Tax : Keep More of Your Money!

The Flat Tax : Keep More of Your Money!
The Issue
No one should pay so much for just existing. My friend works full-time as a food delivery driver in downtown Toronto, earning $3,200 per month. His $2,100 rent for a one-bedroom apartment, $450 for groceries, $220 for transit, and $150 for utilities leave him with almost nothing at the end of the month. Imagine trying to save for daycare costs for his daughter under these constraints.
The current taxation system in Canada unfairly burdens those who are struggling just to make ends meet. Canada's federal basic personal amount, the threshold under which Canadians start paying federal income taxes, is crucial for relieving financial pressure. Yet, it remains woefully low considering the current cost of living. Increasing the personal amount to $25,000 would provide necessary financial relief to many hardworking Canadians like my friend, Hamza.
Moreover, adopting a flat tax rate of 15% would introduce a fairer, more straightforward tax system. Right now, the complexity of our system disproportionately affects those with lower income while offering loopholes for the wealthy. A flat tax ensures equity; everyone pays the same proportion, and it closes gaps that previously benefited the rich.
According to a study by the Fraser Institute, the average Canadian family spends 44% of its income on taxes, more than on basic necessities. This isn't sustainable, and it forces many to live paycheck to paycheck. Raising the basic personal amount and implementing a flat tax rate would ensure fiscal fairness and provide all Canadians with greater financial security.
We need systemic change that reflects our current economic reality. Help Hamza, and many others like him, by calling on the Canadian government to raise the basic personal amount to $25,000 and implement a 15% flat tax. Let's make sure everyone contributes fairly while relieving those who can least afford the current burden.
Please sign this petition to urge policymakers to take immediate action toward a more just and equitable tax system in Canada. Together, we can make a difference.
